Year 1 - Update

Year 1 have had a wonderful half term at school and we can’t wait to share everything that we have learnt so far with you! Here are some of the things that we have been up to since our last blog post!

Super senses!

In our Science learning, we have been investigating our senses. We started off by taking part in a carousel of activities where we explored our senses. We had to guess an object in a mystery box based on the smell or touch, we listened to sounds and predicted what was making that noise and even found out that our sense of smell can impact our sense of taste! As well as this, we went on a senses walk around the school and took part in an obstacle course to find out how important our sense of sight was. To round off our Science learning, we had a visit from Guide Dog for the Blind, who taught us about what it it like without our sense of sight. We had the opportunity to write our names in braille and, whilst blindfolded, we made a jam sandwich and created a piece of art!

Amazing Artists

Towards the end of the half term, we had an Art skills week. Year 1 had a great time learning how to set up a paint station in our classroom and finding out how to mix powder paint to create secondary colours. We mixed the primary colours to make green, orange and purple and created our own colour wheels. We applied what we found out and created a beautiful sunset to publish our writing linked to pirates. In addition to this, we had the best time using clay! We practised pushing and pulling techniques, as well as using rolling pins and various tools to create marks and patterns.

To end our half term, we had a MFL week, where we learnt all about France! We started off the week by learning the french words for different colours and animals, where to find France on a map and what foods are popular in France. We had our picture taken in front of the Eiffel Tower and then wrote a postcard as if we had visited Paris! One of our favourite things  from this week was learning a French song and performing it to Year 2!
