Year 2 blog:

Igniting an inferno from a single spark…

This half term, Year 2 have been making links and connections between our learning by writing a report all about the Great Fire of London. We have absolutely loved being able to teach our readers all about the interesting facts that we discovered on our learning journey. Did you know that St Paul’s Cathedral was burnt down along with 87 churches and 13,200 houses? We have especially loved improving our vocabulary with descriptive and technical language to sound like professional firefighters and experts! In our classes, we have built a word wall which we use to help us with our learning. Some of our favourites are: colossal, inferno, rampage, consume and engulf!

What’s the time Mr Wolf?

In maths, we have been learning how to read and draw different times on a clock. After retrieving our learning on telling the time to the nearest hour and half hour, we have discovered that there are 30 minutes in half an hour and 15 minutes in a quarter of an hour. It really helped to link this to our previous learning on fractions to see on the clock that we are halfway or a quarter of the way through the hour.

“The Queen of the Ocean”

All Aboard! In history, we have begun our new topic on the Titanic. Lots of us have incredible knowledge already about the ship and have loved to share our books and facts with our class. We have become true historians by analysing different sources and thinking about what they tell us about the Titanic, such as mattress adverts and quotes from Sir Phillip Franklin (the Manager of the White Star Line ship company). At first, we learned that the Titanic was extremely luxurious, but overtime we have discovered that not all of the ship was the same, such as the staff quarters. Ask us which class cabins we would rather have stayed in and why!
