Fire! Fire! Fire!
This week, Year 2 and Year 5 became honorary fire fighters when the Hampshire Fire Service visited our classes!
In Year 2, the first thing that we had to learn to achieve was standing up, smart, alert and ready, when our fire chief called out "Firefighters Attention!". We showcased our amazing knowledge of objects around our homes and school that can be dangerous and could cause a fire, such as irons and plug sockets. We even learned a rhyme about the dangers of lighters and matches using sign language: "Matches and lighters never touch. They can hurt you very much!" Can you test us to see how much we have remembered?
Before the fire crew came to visit, we thought about questions to ask. We learned that they have to get to an emergency within less than 8 minutes and that they absolutely love their job. The most hilarious part was when they told us about a unique rescue, which was when they attached a sausage to a drone to attract a dog back to its owner!
"The best part of our visit was when Mr Fear and Miss Fairs had to dress up in a firefighter uniform in less than 1 minute! They wore a tunic, leggings, metal boots, gloves and a helmet. All of this was to keep them safe and protected while they are rescuing others." Olivia and Marnie.
In Year 5, the Fire Safety Officers even shared life-saving advice and facts with the children, such as:
when to regularly check our fire alarms and how to look after them
how to raise the alarm in an emergency and what to do in an emergency situation
the role of the fire service beyond putting out fires
the main causes of fire (cooking, smoking, electrical and candles)
All of the children had the most amazing morning and felt very inspired to keep ourselves and our families protected at home and school. Always remember: Get out, stay out and call 999!
