Year 4 Update
Year Four have made an incredible start to the academic year!
"Miss Trunchbull was a gigantic holy terror, a fierce tyrannical monster, who frightened the life out of pupils and teachers alike." (from Matilda, Roald Dahl) Thank goodness none of the teachers at Bitterne Park Primary School are like this, our Year 4 children have decided! Following their exploration of her character, the children have chosen specific adjectives to
craft a formidable character description all about this tyrant. Thinking about her behaviour, as well as how other character's react around her, the children have used writing techniques, such as 'show me, don't tell me' to build up tension and create their desired picture in the reader's mind.
"Tension means intimidating the reader through pressure, hints and building terror. For example, thunderous booming stomps came from downstairs." - Sullivan
"The malicious, diabolical witch slammed into a helpless and innocent child, who went flying!" - Annie
Marvellous Maths
Using their deepened knowledge of place value in numbers with up to 4 digit numbers, the children have ordered and compared numbers, extending their knowledge to representing numbers in different ways. In problem solving, they have continued to explore bar modelling as a strategy tool to visualise and solve increasingly complex problems!
Tremendous Teeth!
Incisors, canines, molars and wisdom teeth have been explored in great detail by the Year 4 children. Through working practically, they have been having lots of fun setting up egg experiments to determine how different drinks affect our teeth! The children predicted the effect that vinegar, coca cola and water might have on the egg shell by using their prior knowledge and comparing it to enamel on the crown of our real teeth!
Hunters and Gatherers
From the Stone Age to the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, the children have explored the changes that have occurred over time. Excited to find out how the different weapons changed and developed, the children have made inferences from key sources and gained new knowledge about threats, such as poison and food availability.
Keep up the hard work, Year Four!
